Ordering an Icon
Almost all our icons are made to commission, that is in direct requests from people around the world for our work. Usually people write an email initially, explaining roughly what they are looking for, and some indication about budget etc. We then continue the correspondence to determine exactly what icon would be appropriate, and then make a design made according to the commissioner's wishes.
A Personal process
We try to develop a personal relationship with the community or individual concerned, and to include design motifs which reflect that person and the ideas he or she has about the subject being depicted.
Obviously a more straightforward design request will take less time to develop, and thus affects costs. Likewise if there is much gold to be used that will push up the price, especially if it is to be water gilded. Prices are also affected by size and especially the complexity of the icon, for example the number of figures. We try to ensure that icons are not just the preserve of the rich or of institutions, by pricing our icons based on the time and skills used. Prices range from about $500 upwards depending on the time involved, as $500 is not a lot to feed a family, raise them, pay for materials etc. if that was your income for a couple of weeks. We want our iconographers to earn at least a living wage, rather than to become rich because of the prowess of their skills.
Time can sometimes be a key factor, and if we can we will accommodate time pressures. However, we have to do so in context of the commissions already received and personnel available.
