Bethlehem, Palestine – The Bethlehem Icon School expressed its gratitude to Dr. Konstanze Runge of the Icon Museum in Frankfurt for entrusting the school and its artists with the commission of an icon of Saint Maryam Baouardy (1846-1878), a revered Palestinian mystic. The icon, recently completed, is now part of a prestigious exhibition dedicated to female saints at the Ikonen Museum in Recklinghausen, Germany.
Dr. Runge commissioned the icon following her visit to the Bethlehem Icon School last spring. Saint Maryam Baouardy, also known as Maryam of Jesus Crucified, holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Bethlehem, where she founded a Carmelite monastery and is interred. The exhibition’s inclusion of her icon, the most recent piece in the collection, highlights the ongoing cultural and spiritual connections between the Bethlehem Icon School and the international community.
The Bethlehem Icon School, managed by Muna Khader, is proud to be part of this remarkable exhibition and looks forward to future collaborations with the Icon Museum in Frankfurt. Despite challenging circumstances, the school remains dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich tradition of iconography.
